  • Palo Alto Battlefield National Historic Site: This National Historical Park preserves the battlefield from the Battle of Palo Alto, which took place on May 8, 1846. This battle was the first major conflict in the Mexican-American War. Visit the park to learn more about this oft-overlooked war in American history.
  • Sabal Palm Sanctuary: The Sabal Palm Sanctuary is a 527-acre area that protects one of the most biodiverse habitats in the county. It contains some of the last remnants of America’s Sabal Palm forest and protects a variety of endangered species. The Sanctuary is home to the historic Rabb Plantation House, which now serves as the Sanctuary’s headquarters.
  • Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge: Sitting just north of Brownsville and stretching along the Gulf Coast is the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge.
